Exciting Spring Trends in Fashion

May 8, 2012 by admin

As the weather warms up, so do people’s color palettes. This spring, people are are turning up the volume in a big way with neon colors and big, bold prints. To keep this exuberance playful but age-appropriate, look for feminine cuts and silhouettes. Take note of these trends, a few straight from Fashion Week:

Neon Colors
Don’t shy away from bright pink, orange, yellow, green, and blue. You can mix and match them for added flair or pair them with a white button-up to tone it down for the office. Opt for long skirts and dresses in neon for extra pop.

Bold Prints
These range from art deco prints to futuristic ones. Floral, as always, is also a great bet, though now you’ll see more pumped-up posies. Bold prints really shine on otherwise polished, business casual attire and when paired with white clothing.

Pastels
If the above options sound too shocking or out-of-character, wearing pastel tones in spring will never go out of style. As a nod to current trends, pass on pinks and baby blues in favor of peach, muted yellow, and reddish orange.

Best Newspaper Comic Strips of All Time

Have you ever found yourself eagerly skipping to the comics when you open a newspaper? If so, then you know pleasurable buzz of intellectual stimulation and funny-bone-tickling enjoyment that a good comic strip can offer. Read on to learn about five of the most iconic and popular newspaper comic strips ever put into print:

Doonesbury, 1970-present
This creation by Garry Trudeau is one of the most popular cartoon strips ever to hit syndication. The strip centers on a main character named Michael Doonesbury but expands beyond that to include a varying roster of fascinating characters. Doonesbury actively engages political issues and presents a wry satire of contemporary life. It has become so popular that some papers have moved it out of the comics section to the Op/Ed section!

The Adventures of Tintin, 1929-1976
Tintin was created by a Belgian artist named Georges Remi, who wrote under the pen name Herge. The strip is known for its brilliant visual appeal, thanks to Herge’s memorable and unique cartooning style, and also for its vivid characters. Tintin is also famous for having included whip-smart satire and political commentary. After originating in Belgium in 1929, the cartoon’s popularity rapidly spread around the world. It has been published in more than 50 languages and more than 200 million books of the comics have been sold to date.

Garfield, 1978-Present
No list of great comic strips would be complete without mention of this iconic cat, created by Jim Davis in the 1970’s. Garfield has become one of the most famous cartoon animals of all time, featured in animated tv shows and movies and loved all over the world. In fact, the Garfield series has been entered into the Guinness Book of World Records for holding the title of being the globe’s most widely syndicated cartoon strip. The series is known for focusing on everyday adventures and foibles rather than engaging with political or social issues.

Peanuts, 1950-2000
This series remains one of the most popular comic strips ever to achieve syndication. Charles Schulz’s characters have become recognized and much-loved figures in popular culture, namely the iconic Charlie Brown and his equally iconic dog, Snoopy. The Peanuts series follows the adventures of a bunch of children as they interact and try to figure out the world around them. The cartoon has been adapted into multiple successful Emmy-winning TV specials and a popular stage musical titled You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. The strip is so popular that, even though Schulz passed away in 2000, many papers are still regularly running re-prints of his brilliant cartoons.

Natural Remedies to Help You Get a Good Night’s Sleep

There’s nothing worse than a sleepless night when you know you’ve got to get out of bed in the morning and tackle a busy day. Here are five natural ways to enhance your sleep so that you will have the energy to handle whatever challenges the waking hours bring:

Bedtime Tea
Before settling into bed, fix yourself a cup of hot tea. Not only will the warmth sooth and calm you but you can choose teas that are known for their sleep enhancement properties. For example, chamomile tea contains properties that signal your brain to tell your body to go to sleep. You can also look for teas that contain melatonin, which will spur your body to enter into a sleep mode.

Keep a Sleep Diary
If you really want to get a handle on your sleep situation, consider keeping a sleep diary. Record the time you go to sleep each night and the hour you wake up the next day, and make a note of any relevant factors potentially impacting your sleep that night, such as your level of exhaustion, your evening activities, and your general mood. Then look for patterns based on what you’ve recorded and use those to isolate the issues that seem to arise when your sleep is less than restorative.

Opt for Darkness
One important way to ensure a good night’s sleep is to block light from your room. That means making the space as dark as possible by eliminating even the smallest light sources like computer screens, backlit devices, and digital read-outs. This works because the human body is conditioned to wake up when there is light.

Keep a Schedule
Eliminating unpredictability from your sleeping habits increases your likelihood of getting a good night’s rest on a regular basis. Try to go to bed every night at the same time and get up at the same time, which will help your body’s biological clock anticipate and create quality sleep each night.

Create a Relaxing Ritual
Make your bedtime ritual a pleasurable and soothing one so that you enjoy winding down for the night. You might read a book or magazine, take a bath, listen to music, light candles and meditate, or engage in any other number of low-stress activities that will help you feel centered so that you can slide easily into a deep sleep.

Wrap It Up: DIY Wrapping Paper

With birthdays and holidays coming fast and furious, it’s easy to find yourself without wrapping paper when you need it. Thankfully, it’s easy for a creative person to improvise some great do-it-yourself wrapping paper if the need arises. Here are some of our favorite ideas.

Brown paper grocery bags are great for wrapping all kinds of gifts. Turn them inside-out so the printing doesn’t show and then use hand-cut potato stamps and poster paint to cover them with fun designs.

Another great way to make unique custom wrapping paper is by using spray paint and a cut-out stencil on thin fabric. By repeating a pattern in multiple colors, you can make wrapping material that people won’t want to throw away.

If you have a color printer, you can use your own photographs to make custom wrapping paper that will charm anybody who receives it. Put family pictures blown up around your boxes and watch the compliments fly.

Another good way to make custom wrapping paper is by using an ordinary rubber stamp. By painting a thin layer of colorful acrylic paint onto the face of the stamp, you can make permanent marks on just about any paper. Brown kraft paper is great to use, as it is inexpensive and holds up well.

If you have some spare time, it can be fun to make totally unique wrapping paper by writing or drawing on large sheets of butcher paper and cutting it up. If you have kids, get them to draw in marker on the paper.

What is The Electoral College?

January 31, 2012 by admin

You likely know that the Electoral College has something to do with electing the President and Vice President but you may not fully grasp its role in that process. With the presidential election coming up, it’s useful to keep in mind that the popular vote is only part of what will elect our leaders. Read on to learn more:

The Role of the EC
The Electoral College is a group of citizens selected by the people to cast votes for President and Vice President. Though Americans vote for these leaders through indirect popular election, their votes count toward a group of electors who pledge to vote when the Electoral College meets.

Why the EC was Formed
The Electoral College was formed in the 1800’s as a method of ensuring that small states could have a voice equal to that of bigger states. Its founders felt that without the Electoral College, all the political power would rest with bigger states.

Additional Benefits of the EC
Supporters of the Electoral College emphasize its role in filtering votes to offer reasonable solutions in cases of regional antagonism and providing politicians with a framework for organizing their campaigns.

Some Cons of the EC
Some people argue that the Electoral College is flawed because it leaves open the possibility that the popular vote winner might lose. Another objection is that the time-delay caused by the EC’s process, which was beneficial when the system was founded, is no longer needed in today’s rapid-communication world.

Drink Up: Five Exceptional Smoothies

With less and less time in the morning, it can be tough to sit down for a full breakfast. That’s why smoothies are becoming a popular choice. If you’re looking to jazz up your blender, here are some delicious and nutritious suggestions for delicious smoothie meals. Add protein powder to any of these concoctions to add calories and nutrients.

  • One of the most enduring combinations for smoothies is banana and strawberry. The berries provide sweetness, while the bananas add protein, fiber, and potassium. They mesh exceptionally well together.
  • For a more subtle combination, blend fresh blueberries with vanilla yogurt. This is a refreshing and delicious treat with a remarkably complex flavor profile.
  • For something a little more filling, try a mixture of bananas and peanut butter. The peanut butter adds a huge dose of protein that can really fill you up without weighing you down.
  • Another great smoothie uses the tang of raspberries, the fiber of apples, and the nutritional punch of bananas to create a robust combination of flavors that tantalizes the taste buds.
  • For a more tropical take on the smoothie, try a combination of peach, pineapple, and mango. The tart sweetness of pineapple meshes perfectly with the more complex flavors of the mango and the peach. This is a great way to start the day, and pretty much everybody will enjoy it.

Five Tips for Winter Driving

December 28, 2011 by admin

Driving in the winter can be lovely, with scenic views of snowy vistas, but it can also be dangerous if you don’t take the proper precautions. Here are some tips to make sure you don’t run into problems on the road this season:

Avoid Tailgating

Tailgating is something you want to avoid under any circumstances but especially during icy or snowy road conditions. When a road is even just lightly covered in ice or snow, the traction becomes significantly reduced, and this means that your car will take longer to stop.

Don't Use Cruise Control

If your car hydroplanes or skids on an icy road while you’re using cruise control, the wheels can start to rapidly spin – and this will increase the chances of you losing command of your vehicle.

Be Prepared

You’ll want to be sure that your car is stocked with the necessities of safe winter driving – antifreeze, windshield washer fluid, flashlight, first aid kid, blanket, and so on. Also make sure that the car itself has been checked so that the battery works, the headlights are clean and functional, and the tires are in good condition.

Handle Skids With Skill

Knowing how to recover from skids is a key feature of effective winter driving. When you brake on a slippery road, make sure you don’t lock up your wheels by braking too hard. Instead, if you begin skidding, turn the vehicle gently in the direction you want the vehicle to go and avoid heavy pressure on the breaks. Click here for helpful details about skid recovery.

Stay in Your Vehicle

If you get stuck in the snow or your vehicle becomes unable to move for any reason, stay warm in your vehicle and wait for help. Make sure that your exhaust pipe is clear of any obstructions (snow and ice included) so that carbon monoxide doesn’t build up in the car.
